2014 Sahara Sand Hare Scramble
PRESS RELEASE: 10/24/14
2014 Sahara Sand Hare Scramble Fundraiser Benefits Eagleswood Volunteer Fire Co.
Saturday and Sunday, October 18th & 19th marked the 12th Annual Sahara Sand Hare Scramble held at Sahara Sand’s 1,000 acre sand mining facility in Eagleswood, NJ. The annual event was presented by the Pine Barrens Enduro Riders with all entrance fees benefiting the Eagleswood Volunteer Fire Company.
The two day event saw over 500 riders and 700 family, friends and spectators enter the Sahara Sand facility. Sanctioned by the East Coast Enduro Association, the Pine Barrens Enduro Riders presented a challenging 12 mile course traversing open fields, wooded trails and sandy hills. The two day event featured racing for all ages and skill levels capped off with a two hour main event featuring the best riders from Pennsylvania to Massachusetts.
The Eagleswood Volunteer Fire Company, consisting of approximately 30 members, was able to raise over $5,500 from collecting entrance fees of five dollars per person. Fred Strang, a member of the Eagleswood Volunteer Fire Company and event organizer, was excited with the results of the event. “This is by far our greatest fundraiser of the year. This year, like years past, we will be able to purchase new equipment and turnout gear, including new airpack bottles.” This year also marked the first time the Fire Company partnered with local Boy Scout Troop 116 to provide food and concessions to the event. Through these efforts, the Boy Scouts were able to raise $1,000 which will be used towards the Scouts 2015 uniforms and camping trips. “We are excited to partner with the Boy Scouts and could not be happier that they were successful this weekend,” stated Strang.
Sahara Sand, a member of the Silvi Group Companies, donates its Eagleswood property twice a year to allow this major fundraiser for the local Volunteer Fire Company and another event in the spring to benefit Eagleswood Township’s recreation activities. “We are very thankful to Sahara Sand for allowing us to hold this event each year,” said Strang.
Among its other various community outreach activities in Eagleswood throughout the year, Sahara Sand supports the local historical society and recreation department, participates in the Country Fair festivities, supports a local Little League Baseball Team and donates Christmas turkeys to the Eagleswood Volunteer Fire Company.
