2024 Wrapped: A Year of Continued Growth and Innovation at Silvi Materials
As we close out 2024, Silvi Materials celebrates a year of milestones that showcase our commitment to excellence, innovation, sustainability, and community impact. From groundbreaking projects to impactful partnerships, here’s a look back at what made this year extraordinary.
Major Projects: Building Success Across the Region
2024 saw Silvi Materials tackle some of the largest and most complex projects in our history, highlighting our ability to deliver exceptional results regardless of the circumstances. Highlights include:
- F Yard Industrial Facility, Jersey City, NJ: In collaboration with GMAC Construction, we completed this 490,000-square-foot industrial facility under tight winter schedules. This project demonstrated our ability to adapt to harsh conditions and ensure timely, high-volume deliveries.
- West Side Square, Jersey City, NJ: Partnering with Roy Rock, we’re at work on two, 13-story mid-rises (connected by a 5-story building). The project totals roughly 24,000 cubic yards of concrete. By coordinating closely with the contractor, we’re ensuring efficient deliveries despite the challenges of working in a busy urban area.
- Northpoint Turnpike Trade Center, Logan, NJ: For this nearly one-million-square-foot multi-phase project, we supplied materials to three different contractors (Forcine Concrete, Cambridge, and Trozzi Construction Services) for diverse applications, including slabs, aprons, and pervious concrete, supporting environmental goals and ensuring consistent quality.
These projects underscore Silvi’s expertise in handling large-scale demands while exceeding client expectations.
New Talent: Growing the Silvi Family
This year, Silvi welcomed 220 new team members, expanding our operations and strengthening our ability to meet growing customer demand. Among these new hires were CDL drivers, mechanics, and office staff, all critical to our vertically integrated business. Our onboarding process is designed to connect employees to the bigger picture, helping them understand how their roles contribute to the company’s success. We also invested in training facilities and resources, including air-ride trainer cabs, which enhance the safety and efficiency of our operations while building a skilled and satisfied workforce.
Sustainability: Leading by Example
Sustainability remained a core focus for Silvi Materials in 2024, as we implemented initiatives that spanned energy efficiency, resource conservation, and environmental stewardship. Solar power played a significant role, with fields at multiple locations reducing reliance on traditional energy sources and even contributing excess power back to the grid in some areas. We also recycled water and concrete to conserve vital resources and minimize waste, while transitioning more of our transportation from trucks to rail, which significantly cut emissions. Beyond operations, our teams actively replaced invasive species with native plants, fostering healthier ecosystems and demonstrating our commitment to environmental leadership.
Philadelphia Eagles Partnership: Strengthening Community Ties
Our partnership with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2024 was a game-changer, elevating Silvi’s visibility while deepening our connection to the community. One of the most impactful moments was the Eagles-Silvi food drive in West Philadelphia, where employees from both organizations came together to collect and distribute thousands of pounds of food to families in need. This event not only demonstrated the power of teamwork but also reinforced the shared values of resilience, hard work, and support that define both organizations.
Silvi Giving: Making a Difference
Philanthropy remained central to Silvi Materials in 2024, as we supported a variety of causes throughout the year. Among these, we are particularly proud of our contributions to two initiatives that directly impacted our employees: the Danica Strong Foundation and Bike MS: City to Shore.
The Danica Strong Foundation, nominated by Procurement Manager Melanie Bagley, holds a deeply personal connection for the Silvi family. The foundation was established in memory of Melanie’s niece, Danica, who sadly lost her battle with brain cancer. This year, Silvi made a financial contribution to the foundation to support its mission of providing assistance to families of children undergoing cancer treatment.
The Bike MS: City to Shore ride also had a personal connection, championed by Chuck Hazlett, Silvi’s Head of Payroll and Benefits. Under Chuck’s leadership, Silvi formed its first official cycling team in 2024, participating in one of the largest fundraising events for the National MS Society. Silvi proudly matched the team’s fundraising efforts, amplifying the impact of their contributions. The event not only raised funds for multiple sclerosis research and support but also fostered camaraderie among team members.
Water Freight: Expanding Our Reach
We shipped approximately 60,000 tons of sand to New York markets via water in 2024. This method offers a cost-effective and eco-friendly alternative to traditional trucking, reducing both traffic congestion and emissions. Customers benefit from the efficiency of water freight, while communities enjoy a cleaner, less congested environment. Our sand, sourced from Port Norris, is renowned for its purity and lack of contaminants, making it an ideal choice for construction projects. As we look ahead, we are exploring opportunities to expand these shipments and incorporate additional materials, such as bulk rock salt, into our water freight network.
New Equipment: Investing in Reliability
Silvi Materials made significant investments in new equipment in 2024 to enhance reliability and support our expanding operations. Among the highlights were Oshkosh S-Series Concrete Mixers, which increased our mixer fleet by nearly 10%, improving delivery reliability and reducing maintenance costs. New Kenworth T680 tractors expanded our bulk cement delivery capabilities across North Jersey and Eastern Pennsylvania, while CAT 982 XE front-end loaders and a 374 excavator boosted efficiency in our mining operations. To ensure rapid response to field repairs, we added a Ford F600 service truck equipped with advanced tools and capabilities, minimizing downtime and keeping our operations running smoothly.
Looking Ahead to 2025
As we enter 2025, Silvi Materials is poised for continued growth and innovation. We’re expanding our rail and water freight operations to deliver even more high-quality materials to key markets. Our commitment to major projects remains strong, with plans to execute large-scale initiatives in key metropolitan areas, building on the success of projects like F Yard and West Side Square.
Charity and community will continue to be a cornerstone of our mission as we deepen our support for causes that matter to our employees and communities. At the same time, we’ll focus on growing our team with top talent and enhancing training programs to maintain our high standards of safety and efficiency. Sustainability remains at the forefront, with plans to rehabilitate our CNG fleet and expand energy-efficient practices.
Finally, we’re excited to enter the second year of our partnership with the Philadelphia Eagles, continuing to build visibility and engage with the community through impactful initiatives.
Thank you to all of our clients, team members, partners, and community members who made this year a resounding success! And here’s to an innovative and memorable 2025!
